Milestones present us opportunities to reflect, and I have been doing just that as I mark 40 years with AtlantiCare. These four decades have brought tremendous growth to the organization and to me personally. I am grateful for the many opportunities that have brought me from staff nurse to CEO, and for the support I have received along the way. I am grateful, too, for the support AtlantiCare has experienced from our community, which has allowed us to invest in new programs and clinical excellence to improve health and a strong care continuum for our community. This year saw many accomplishments. The highlights are included here. As I think of the future of healthcare, and reflect on my own experiences, I am struck by the many directions that a career in healthcare can take, and the vital need particularly for nurses in so many different healthcare settings. Caring is truly at the heart of what we do – from taking care of individual patients to living our commitment to the health of the community. As AtlantiCare embarks upon its next chapter and I on mine, I want to take a moment to share my gratitude and many thanks – it has been a pleasure to care for you. Keep making a difference,
Lori Herndon, RN, BSN, MBA President & CEO, AtlantiCare

We recently marked an important milestone in the Mainland Expansion Project: with the last steel beam in place, AtlantiCare staff, providers, and administration took permanent markers to sign their names and share messages of healing. “Here’s to the future,” wrote one. The expansion project, estimated at $75 million, will add two floors (35,000 square feet) to Mainland’s Meadow Pavilion and will feature the renovation of an additional 23,000 square feet at locations throughout the campus. “Our major goals with this project are to expand ICU capacity and to increase private rooms, which we recognize is becoming the standard of care,” says Frank Carpenter, Vice President
& CAO for AtlantiCare - Mainland Campus. “Every aspect of this project has been designed with patient care in mind – from minimizing impact on current patients as we knock down walls and add new ones, to the design and articulation of new equipment in ICU rooms, we’re planning for AtlantiCare’s future and its ability make a difference in health and healing years down the road.” Construction began during the first quarter of 2022 and is estimated to be completed by mid-year 2025.

MAY “We Are Healthcare Heroes”
Masks can’t hide the passion, focus, and dedication of AtlantiCare hospital staff, who were photographed on-the-job for an AtlantiCare Foundation Healing Arts project. The photos, on display in both Mainland and City hospital campuses, highlight healthcare workers in their work environment and celebrate hospital staff in recognition of National Hospital Week 2022. “Physicians, nurses, therapists, EMTs, food service workers, administrators, technicians – every person is important to improving the health of patients,” says Cheryl Broschard, Foundation Project Manager, Healing Arts Program. “We wanted to bring out the personal side and the many voices of the people who make AtlantiCare tick. There’s no staging, no special lighting – just staff, doing their jobs. What we ended up capturing was so honest, so personal, and so beautiful.” The project also included a video, posted on AtlantiCare’s Facebook page, in which staff share what they love most about their work. Caring for patients “makes you feel like you are doing something special,” says one
employee. “AtlantiCare has a lot of wonderful people and they bring out the best in each other,” says another. “The satisfaction of people getting better,” says a third. “It’s a great gig.”

JUNE NICU Marks 50th Anniversary
On June 4, 2022, nearly 300 former patients and family members gathered in honor of AtlantiCare’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s (NICU) 50th anniversary. Established in 1972, the NICU has served tens of thousands of babies born early or with special medical needs in Southern New Jersey. “It’s so heartwarming to see our NICU babies, who we remember as being so small and fragile, as happy, healthy, energetic toddlers and children when they come back,” says Elizabeth Hendricks, Clinical Manager, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “We love reconnecting with families – the bonds we form with parents are so deep.”
In its 50 years, the NICU has seen many changes. Today, the care team provides wraparound services, connecting families with social services, promoting early literacy, offering breastfeeding and lactation support, and providing baby essentials, such as car seats and portable cribs to ensure safe transportation and safe sleep, when families need them. In late 2021, the AtlantiCare Foundation purchased video cameras, which allow parents to live stream video of their baby in the NICU at any time of day. “We want to give these babies, who have come into the world at some level of elevated need, every possible benefit we can,” adds Hendricks.

JULY ‘Safe Beginnings’ begin with AtlantiCare
The infant mortality rate in Atlantic County is six of every 1,000 live births, a statistic that AtlantiCare’s Safe Beginnings Program is working hard to combat. With funding from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, the program increases access to care for Atlantic City women and babies. “We know that barriers to care exist, and that when individuals who are pregnant don’t get care pre-and post-birth, outcomes are
worse for both mom and baby,” says Sandra Garrett, Vice President, AtlantiCare Women’s and Children’s Services. “With our Safe Beginnings vehicle, we can see patients at home or pick them up and bring them to their appointments. We traveled more than 1,400 miles in Atlantic City in less than eight months.” Safe Beginnings follows patients both prenatally and up to a year postpartum, providing transitional care for infants and new moms. Through education, follow-up mental health and post-natal care, we connect patients to essential resources. Providers made more than 530 visits in 2022 to care for approximately 100 patients. “This is critical to improve the lives of Atlantic City families,” says Garrett. “I’m proud of the work we do.”

SEPTEMBER Treating the whole person for mental healthcare and recovery
“We are a diverse multi-disciplinary team that meets our clients where they are,” says Nicole M. Tursi, Director, AtlantiCare Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. The clinic employs a holistic approach to mental health and substance use disorder treatment, providing peer support, case management, individual therapy, group therapy, and medication management. Clients with additional needs are connected to primary care providers, housing resources, and food supply. CCBHC’s Atlantic City location, opened in late 2021, saw 684 clients in its first year. Hammonton, established as a pilot program in 2017, saw 703. “Our integrated care model breathes AtlantiCare’s vision of building healthy communities,” says Tursi. “Patients get better because we treat the whole person.”
OCTOBER The Foundation held its 61st Annual Century Club Gala on October 9, 2022. Each year our gala honors those who have made a difference in our community with the Edward R. Knight Award. Dr. Kamal and Dee Kassis as well as Joseph Kelly were recognized as the 2022 recipients of this award.

NOVEMBER Medical Arts Pavilion brings expanded care to Atlantic City
AtlantiCare brought out the ceremonial scissors to mark the opening of its Medical Arts Pavilion November 15, 2022.
The $38.3 million facility stands just a few steps away on Ohio Avenue from where AtlantiCare opened in 1898 as Atlantic City Hospital. All- new construction is the new home to AtlantiCare’s Medical Education Program, which includes residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, pharmacy, and psychiatry. This state-of-the-art facility is already increasing the programs’ visibility, which has seen an uptick in native-New Jersey applicants, says Jim Kilmer, Vice President & CAO for AtlantiCare - Atlantic City Campus. The facility has allowed AtlantiCare’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Pediatrics and Family Medicine teaching clinics to
expand, increasing access to care for underserved populations and those facing chronic health conditions. It also houses AtlantiCare’s newly expanded Maternal Fetal Medicine, Family Planning, and Safe Beginnings programs, aimed at increasing services and providing comprehensive care to mothers, babies, and families in Atlantic City. Also, planning for the changing needs of our community, we have allotted additional space for dialysis and outpatient neuro services, set to relocate in summer 2023. AtlantiCare’s FQHC will also open a dental clinic for patients of all ages in fall 2023. “We’re off and running full tilt,” says Kilmer. “It’s a huge project and it continues to grow. We are excited about the opportunities to enhance access to quality care for the Atlantic City community.”

DECEMBER “Every second gives you a better chance at saving a life.”
The AtlantiCare Foundation’s Heart Heroes Matching Funds Program, established in 2002 to raise funds to help place automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in the community, recently celebrated a milestone: the 400th AED was donated to the Galloway Township Fire Department in a ceremony that, fittingly, took place on Valentine’s Day. In 2022, the Heart Heroes placed 32 AEDs in locations throughout Southern New Jersey. “What better way to show love for our community than to provide these life-saving tools,” said LJ Wehner, Director, AtlantiCare Heart and Lung Institute. “We hope these AEDs are never needed – but we know the value in having an AED onsite and in being prepared. Every second counts in a cardiac event. AEDs save lives.” In recognition of its 400th placement, The Heart Heroes Fund covered the entire cost of the 10 AEDs donated to Galloway Township Fire Department. Traditionally, the receiving organization covers half the cost of the AED, and the AtlantiCare Foundation covers the remaining cost. “We are immensely grateful for the Foundation’s support and for the support of our community in helping raise funds to bring AEDs to community organizations over the last 20 years,” adds Wehner. “People say they feel safer having AEDs onsite, whether that’s at a place of worship, a school, or a youth sporting organization. We’re helping protect our community.”

Thank You
2022 was a year that saw many changes. As the world emerged from the pandemic, we felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the leadership that allowed us to address the immediate needs while simultaneously planning for AtlantiCare’s future. Our Mainland Campus Expansion Project began, taking lessons from COVID for facility design. This capital project positions AtlantiCare to take care of our community for years to come. We are grateful for our AtlantiCare team that continues to care for patients, for our community, and for each other. As our Hospital Week Tribute project illustrates, it takes each of us working together to create relationships, facilitate healing, and build healthy communities. On behalf of the AtlantiCare Foundation and the Board of Trustees, we offer our sincere gratitude to Lori Herndon for her leadership as CEO. She has provided vision and guidance as we embarked on our projects, many of which are described here, that have positioned AtlantiCare for success. Lori, each and everyday, you enabled us to make a difference. And lastly, we thank you – it is your generosity that has allowed us to forge our path well into the future. The tremendous support for our Medical Arts Pavilion has brought us into being a facility that is already changing care in Atlantic City. Our Safe Beginnings program meets patients where they are – often at home – to expand access to pre- and post-natal care. It, along with the many other services and programs offered at the pavilion, is actively changing the lives of individuals in our region. As we prepare to celebrate the 125 th anniversary of AtlantiCare’s humble beginnings on Ohio Avenue later this year, we are reminded of the fundamental principle of caring. Even as the faces of AtlantiCare change, and as we chart new paths to better meet the needs of those we have yet to meet – caring for our community, one person at a time, is at the heart of all we do.
