Over the past four decades, the AtlantiCare Foundation has partnered with generous people like you to support AtlantiCare in achieving its vision of building healthy communities by enabling one life-changing moment at a time. With your help, we’ve been able to accomplish a lot – thank you.
This giving year, generous gifts to the AtlantiCare Foundation totaled $3.05 million. We know that there are many organizations in our community worthy of your philanthropic support, and we are most grateful that you have chosen to put your trust in AtlantiCare. Because of you, we have been able to: • Raise more than $35,000 to support hospice care and services for uninsured and underinsured patients • Install 57 new life-saving Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in our community for a grand total of 230 through the Heart Heroes program • Advance cutting-edge cancer treatment technology with gifts toward the Cancer Care Institute totaling $166,610 As you can see from just these few examples, your trust in us has made a difference. It has made a difference to thousands of people who come to our doors for hope, healing, comfort and care. Thank you for caring about them as much as we do. With gratitude,
Lori Herndon, RN, BSN, MBA President & Chief Executive Office, AtlantiCare
2 Annual Report on Giving 2017
On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, I want to express our sincere gratitude for your support. You chose to make a moment matter and supported the work of the AtlantiCare Foundation. Whether inspired by a personal experience of your own or simply as a result of an internal desire to give back to the community we proudly share, you are forging a hopeful future for others. Thank you. We are happy to share with you this report on giving from our 2016-2017 giving year. We hope it will provide you with valuable insight on how each and every dollar raised was put to work to make a difference in the communities we serve. We hope that as we continue to celebrate the Foundation’s 40th Anniversary you will join us by either renewing or possibly furthering your commitment to our organization. It is truly with your support that we are able to transform, grow and prepare for the healthcare needs of the future – together. All the best,
Pat Agnellini, Esq. Chairman of the Board of Directors, AtlantiCare Foundation
I feel incredibly lucky to have had the privilege of serving two terms as the Chairman of the Board for the AtlantiCare Foundation from 2013 to 2017. During this time, I was proud to be a part of a teamwhere we were able to provide 355 free mammogram screenings that led to the early detection of seven patients, raise more than $97,000 toward our behavioral health initiative to curb local opioid use and prevent suicides, and install 78 community gardens through the Growing Green program, just to name a few. You were the most vital part of the team. Together, with your generous gifts of time, goodwill and financial support, we have been able to make moments matter to many of our friends and neighbors. However, as we celebrate our successes in this report, there are certainly many more life-changing moments to be made. I invite you to join my successor, Pat, as he embarks on a journey this year with the AtlantiCare Foundation during its 40th Anniversary campaign, paying homage to our founders and ensuring investments continue to be made to secure our community’s future. Sincerely,
Ben Zeltner, Esq. Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors, AtlantiCare Foundation

AtlantiCare celebrated nurses during National Nurses Week May 6-12, 2017 with the Caring Hands Exhibit. Caring Hands was an exhibition of black- and-white portraits that showcase and celebrate the nurses of AtlantiCare. AtlantiCare’s Healing Arts Program commissioned five photographers to capture the hands of more than 60 individuals. The exhibit was a snapshot of AtlantiCare’s approximately 1,500 nurses who care for our community in five counties throughout southern New Jersey. Caring Hands Exhibit Healing Arts Program

Assumption Regional Catholic School Fundraiser On June 2, 2017, students of Assumption Regional Catholic School hosted a Ribbons of Hope Field Day event that raised $10,500 for the AtlantiCare Cancer Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner. Students participated in several fun-filled educational events that gave them an opportunity to involve students in a philanthropic event while teaching them about prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. The event also featured a celebration of survivors, a tribute to those who lost their fight against cancer, and honored those who continue to fight.

instinct to do the latter, but think twice about that.” “The care teamwas excellent. Everyone was terrific. Mary Tiernan, one of my nurses, made a special connection to make sure we knew what to expect,” Gary said. Gary is an AtlantiCare board member and has been a long time donor of the AtlantiCare Foundation. The Hansons’ continued support has enabled the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center to launch several new projects and services, foster innovations in healthcare and respond to barriers in the community that have an impact on the health status of the community. Gary and Kathy raised their two children in Absecon while he worked as an Atlantic City Electric executive. They currently share time between their home in Egg Harbor Township and Naples, Florida. Gary and Kathy recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.
Gary Hanson was 64 when he had his stroke on October 9, 2015. “Up until that time, I had been feeling fine. I had gone to bed at about 11:30 p.m. on October 8. We had held my father’s viewing and funeral earlier that day. My wife woke at about 2:30 the next morning. She says I was thrashing around in the bed and realized something wasn’t right. She called 911,”explained Gary. Egg Harbor Township Ambulance and Police responded, as did AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s paramedics. “By dialing 911 and sharing specific paramedics would be among the first responders to help her husband,” said Thomas Brabson, D.O., chairman, ARMC Emergency Medical Services. ARMC paramedics rode in the ambulance to care for Gary on his way to ARMC Atlantic City Campus. information about Mr. Hanson’s symptoms, Mrs. Hanson ensured
Jorge L. Eller, MD, and his team operated on Gary to remove the clot in his brain. Dr. Eller performed an emergency mechanical thrombectomy. “When I woke to find Gary having stroke symptoms, I thought my life was changing before my eyes,” says Kathy Hanson. “I felt like there was nothing I could do. It was so far frommy mind in terms of what I thought could happen to him, especially since it was just days after his father’s stroke. I was so grateful to know what to do and where to go.” The difference for Gary compared to his father, Alfred, was that the doctors were able to get to his clot quickly and remove it, leading to a successful recovery. But that delay in care for someone having a stroke, like Gary, could have been deadly. “It’s important to note that they (the Hansons) reacted so quickly and had the foresight to call 911 instead of sleeping through the night,” Eller said. “It’s a natural

“When someone gives you back a quality of life, nothing can really repay them. I am truly indebted to the doctors, nurses and staff of AtlantiCare. Making a gift to the AtlantiCare Foundation was simply a way I could say thank you.” Joe Mazzeo Linwood Mitral Valve Replacement 2002 Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement 2017 Grateful Patient Donor 2017
Coming to terms with his heart condition wasn’t something that came easy to Joe Mazzeo. “I am not used to being sick and at the age of 40, when I began to feel tired all the time, I knew something wasn’t right, but it was hard to admit it.” As a veteran of the US Navy, an entrepreneur with a drive for success and a dedicated father, Joe believed he was living a lifestyle to afford him a healthy future. “The doctors told me my heart was working overtime and I couldn’t ignore the signs anymore.” With the advice from his doctors, he began asking around for opinions on where to seek treatment. “I had a regular customer at the market – a doctor. We would talk a lot and we became friendly. So I felt confident I would get an honest answer from him. So, I asked him if I should go to Philadelphia for my cardiac care. He said to me, ‘They are recruiting the best doctors around from Chicago to NewYork. You don’t have to leave home to get top-notch care. Go right here to Galloway.’ That was all I needed,” Joe said. Joe’s first surgery was in 2002 with James Dralle, MD, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Heart Institute at ARMC, where he underwent a mitral valve replacement. For years, he did well without any issues. But in time, his heart again began to affect his quality of life.
In early 2017, Howard Axelrod, MD, Cardiac Surgeon, the Heart Institute at ARMC, performed a transcatheter aortic valve replacement. “Dr. Axelrod and his team are miracle workers in my book. In the months since my surgery, it’s like I have a new lease on life. Someone does you a good turn like that, I felt I had to do something. It just felt right to give back. I couldn’t just say ‘thanks and good bye.’ I needed to do more.” Joe generously donated to the
AtlantiCare Foundation as part of the Grateful Patient program in honor of his caregivers: James Dralle, MD, Howard Axelrod, MD, Jeff VanHook, MD, Rashmikant Desai, MD, Dawn
Mutchko, APN, and Dawn Christensen. Joe is a retired entrepreneur. He was part owner of the Tilton Meat Market in Northfield for 13 years before branching out on his own and opening Joe’s Seaside Market on 12th Avenue in Brigantine, which he operated for more than 20 years. With his improved quality of life, he is back on the golf course and enjoys traveling to visit his daughter, Toni, in California.

58th Annual Century Club Gala
The AtlantiCare Foundation held its 58th Annual Century Club Gala, with the theme “Moulin Rouge,”on April 8, 2017, at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, with more than 700 in attendance to honor 2017 Edward R. Knight Physician and Community Award recipients Alan Simpson, MD, FACR, and the Glenn family. Proceeds from the Gala supported the AtlantiCare Foundation’s fundraising efforts in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. The programs that will benefit are the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner; AtlantiCare Behavioral Health and AtlantiCare’s Healing Arts
Program. Proceeds will also benefit the establishment of a Healthy Communities Fund. Dr. Simpson’s efforts have led to a reduction in healthcare costs and improvements in care quality and patient safety. He has been a member of the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Department of Radiology since 1976 and has been a clinical leader and an ardent champion for patient quality and safety issues. Simpson was an early adopter of AtlantiCare’s population health strategies and has worked with his fellow physicians to identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary and/or duplicative studies.
As a family, the Glenns are a charitable force. What started out with the late Mr. Thomas Glenn II and his service to not only AtlantiCare and many other local agencies is now continued by his beloved wife, Anne Marie, and his children, with Thomas Glenn III, or Tim, serving as the family figurehead. AtlantiCare and the greater community have been recipients of this family’s call to action through the Glenn Legacy. Beyond their individual contributions, the Glenns also encourage their entire workforce at Glenn Insurance to make a difference in the communities they serve.
