JUNE NICU Marks 50th Anniversary

On June 4, 2022, nearly 300 former patients and family members gathered in honor of AtlantiCare’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit’s (NICU) 50th anniversary. Established in 1972, the NICU has served tens of thousands of babies born early or with special medical needs in Southern New Jersey. “It’s so heartwarming to see our NICU babies, who we remember as being so small and fragile, as happy, healthy, energetic toddlers and children when they come back,” says Elizabeth Hendricks, Clinical Manager, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “We love reconnecting with families – the bonds we form with parents are so deep.”

In its 50 years, the NICU has seen many changes. Today, the care team provides wraparound services, connecting families with social services, promoting early literacy, offering breastfeeding and lactation support, and providing baby essentials, such as car seats and portable cribs to ensure safe transportation and safe sleep, when families need them. In late 2021, the AtlantiCare Foundation purchased video cameras, which allow parents to live stream video of their baby in the NICU at any time of day. “We want to give these babies, who have come into the world at some level of elevated need, every possible benefit we can,” adds Hendricks.
