2025 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

2025 Board of Trustees

At AtlantiCare, our purpose has always been rooted in place. For more than a century, this organization has existed not merely to deliver care, but to serve, strengthen and uplift the communities that define our region. Today, as healthcare stands at an inflection point nationally, AtlantiCare is clear about who we are, why we exist and the responsibility we carry as southeastern New Jersey’s preeminent anchor institution. This annual report reflects more than performance. It tells the story of impact, of lives touched, communities strengthened and a future being deliberately built. Across our region, AtlantiCare caregivers show up every day with uncommon commitment and compassion. They provide world-class care in moments of vulnerability, urgency and hope. They innovate under pressure. They lead through change. Whether at the bedside, in the community or behind the scenes, our team members are the heart of this organization and the reason AtlantiCare continues to earn the trust of those we serve. That trust matters. Because healthcare today is no longer confined to hospital walls. Through Vision 2030, AtlantiCare has embraced a broader calling: to advance health, vitality and opportunity across the full spectrum of life. This means expanding access, improving outcomes, addressing the drivers of health beyond clinical care and building sustainable systems that endure for generations. It means aligning care delivery with affordability, equity and experience. And it means investing in capabilities, not just facilities that position our region to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As an anchor institution, AtlantiCare plays a unique and essential role in regional prosperity. We are one of the largest employers, educators, purchasers and investors in southeastern New Jersey. With that scale comes responsibility. We are committed to leveraging our assets, clinical, economic and social, to strengthen neighborhoods, grow the workforce, support local partners and create pathways to opportunity. Health, hope and vitality are inseparable from economic stability, education, housing and community resilience. Our strategy reflects that truth. This past year, we made meaningful progress: advancing integrated care models, expanding ambulatory and community-based access, strengthening partnerships and investing in our team members. We did so while maintaining financial discipline and operational excellence, recognizing that sustainability is not a constraint on mission, but a prerequisite for it. Most importantly, we remained focused on what matters most: the people who entrust us with their care and the communities that depend on us. The future of healthcare will reward organizations that are bold, disciplined and deeply connected to the communities they serve. AtlantiCare is prepared for that future. We are building a system designed not only to respond to illness, but to foster lifelong health. Not only to deliver care, but to create vitality. Not only to succeed as an organization, but to help our region flourish. I am profoundly grateful to our caregivers, physicians, team members, partners, trustees and community leaders for their dedication and belief in this mission. Together, we are shaping a new chapter, one defined by excellence, purpose and shared prosperity. Thank you for your trust in AtlantiCare. With resolve and optimism,

Access for All: Delivering High-Quality Care Without Compromise

Federally Qualified Health Center

At AtlantiCare’s Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), care is designed to ensure every individual receives high-quality healthcare, no matter what their circumstances. For thousands of individuals and families in our region, the FQHC is more than a place to see a doctor, it is a trusted doorway to health, stability and support. Many of our FQHC patients and families face barriers such as limited insurance coverage, financial hardship or complex life circumstances and social needs. Our mission is to provide comprehensive, dependable, affordable care without ever compromising quality. Patients receive care for the whole person, with access to primary care, dental, behavioral health services, substance abuse treatment, specialty care, pharmacy support and connections to community resources, all in one place, and regardless of their ability to pay. That integrated approach means patients and their families are never forced to make impossible choices between their health and their basic needs, between filling a prescription or putting food on the table. This coordinated approach across services helps patients stay engaged in their care plan and ensures support at every step of their care journey. Quality care remains central to everything we do. AtlantiCare’s FQHCs have earned national recognition from the Health Resources and Services Administration for excellence in areas including heart health, behavioral health and diabetes care. These honors reflect a model built on trust and grounded in each person’s lived experience. Certified Community Behavioral Health Center AtlantiCare’s Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC) reflects the same core belief that guides our FQHC: access and excellence must go hand in hand. Behavioral health care should be easy to access, comprehensive in scope and delivered without compromise—especially for individuals and families living in rural areas where services are often limited. Located in Hammonton, AtlantiCare’s CCBHC was designed to make behavioral health services easier by bringing critical services together in one place. The center provides all nine required CCBHC services, including crisis intervention, mental health and substance use treatment, psychiatric rehabilitation, care management, peer and family support, and services for veterans. In addition, AtlantiCare places an emphasis on primary care screenings, women’s health services, outpatient detoxification and enhanced children’s mental health programs—addressing the whole person, not just a single diagnosis. Now in its eighth year, the CCBHC has grown alongside the community it serves. Demand for services has led to a doubling of both staff and physical space, allowing the team to care for more than 1,600 individuals in 2025 and over 22,000 screenings while maintaining the highest standard of compassionate, coordinated care.

AtlantiCare continues to set the standard for trauma education through its 27th Annual Trauma Symposium, the largest trauma symposium in New Jersey. Drawing participants from across the country, the 3-day event is designed for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and other healthcare professionals and reflects AtlantiCare’s depth of expertise and our commitment to advancing trauma care beyond our own walls. That expertise is rooted in daily practice. As a Level II Trauma Center, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center treats more than 2,000 trauma patients each year, caring for both blunt and penetrating injuries—the two primary categories of trauma cases. Our teams deliver rapid, coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with catastrophic injuries, ensuring the highest level of readiness when it matters most. Excellence in Trauma Care and Education That real-world experience anchors the symposium’s programming. This year’s event featured AtlantiCare physicians, alongside distinguished guest speakers, offering powerful clinical and leadership perspectives shaped by the most demanding circumstances. By convening local and national voices and sharing frontline expertise, AtlantiCare not only delivers exceptional trauma care but equips others to do the same, strengthening trauma programs and outcomes far beyond our region.

From Opportunity to Impact Beth Ann Bates’s journey reflects the heart of AtlantiCare’s Certified Community Behavioral Health Center (CCBHC). She began her work as a peer recovery specialist through a grant focused on community outreach and engagement, spending her days connecting with individuals in need and supporting them on their path to recovery.

Through those experiences at the CCBHC, Beth discovered a deeper calling to return to school to pursue a degree in social work. With the generous support from the Virginia Gormley MSW Scholarship, she advanced her education while staying closely connected to the community she serves.

Today, Beth is a clinical intern working toward her Master’s Degree in Social Work, continuing to support patients at the CCBHC. Her story is a powerful example of how investing in people strengthens communities and creates a cycle of care that grows from within.

How Animals Deliver Comfort and Safety A “Tail” of Two Programs

Carmen and Donna Romeo: Generously Supporting Health and Community in Atlantic City Carmen and Donna Romeo are making a meaningful difference in the lives of Atlantic City residents through philanthropy and deep commitment to community health. Seasonal residents of Longport, the Romeos recognize that just miles from their home, many families in Atlantic City face significant challenges and are in need of vital services. Their desire to help inspired an initial gift to the AtlantiCare Foundation in 2024. As they continued to learn more about the challenges in Atlantic City, their desire to make an even greater impact grew. A tour of the AtlantiCare HealthPlex highlighted the breadth of services available, from eighteen clinical care specialties to nutrition programs and day programs designed to foster social connection. Conversations with clinicians and leaders deepened their understanding of how AtlantiCare addresses social determinants of health – factors that influence

AtlantiCare’s commitment to the health of our region reaches far beyond the care delivered within the walls of our hospitals and facilities. Across the region, first responders, including law enforcement, public safety, EMS and clinical teams, play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our communities. And in those critical moments, trust and shared understanding between these groups can make all the difference. Recognizing the power of stronger connections, AtlantiCare took action to bridge gaps and bring these groups together. Several years ago, our Public Safety and Clinical Services teams and the Atlantic City Police Department launched the Atlantic County Collaborative Operations and Management Meeting (AC-COMM), a forum designed to bring first responder agencies and healthcare partners to the same table and work through operational challenges together. Bringing Partners Together to Strengthen Regional Safety and Care

Animals can play a powerful role in healing, offering comfort, reassurance and a sense of safety during moments when people feel most vulnerable. This understanding has shaped two programs that integrate animals into care environments to support our patients, families and team members. The Healing Paws Therapy Animal Program is designed to foster comfort and connection. Certified therapy animals visit care settings to calm, reassure and provide moments of companionship for patients and their loved ones. For patients and families navigating stressful or emotional situations, time with a therapy dog can reduce stress and restore a sense of normalcy. These interactions also support our team members by offering an emotional reset, even on the most demanding days.

What began as a small meeting has since evolved into a multi-county coalition of 25 public safety organizations. Today, AC-COMM represents a multidisciplinary group of clinical leaders and first responders from across our region, united by a shared commitment to improving how care and safety are delivered. AC-COMM convenes monthly to address complex operational challenges at the intersection of healthcare and public safety. Through open dialogue and shared problem-solving, the group helps break down the operational silos that can sometimes delay or complicate response efforts. Just as important, it has created a direct line of communication which allows partners to align on protocols and resolve issues before they surface during emergencies. In December, AtlantiCare hosted a first responders’ luncheon to celebrate the people and partnerships that make this collaboration possible. With more than 100 attendees, the luncheon provided AtlantiCare’s Department of Public Safety an opportunity to thank all the participants and reaffirm our shared responsibility to the communities we serve.

both life expectancy and overall well-being. In 2025, they were generous once again in supporting AtlantiCare’s nutritional programs, including two healthful food pantries and the Mobile Market, as well as community-based screenings that help residents build lasting connections to care.

“We believe in giving as well as participating,” said Donna Romeo. “Through financial support and volunteerism, we seek to gain a deeper understanding of the factors at play that we aim to help address.” Carmen and Donna’s dedication serves as an

In addition to Healing Paws, AtlantiCare utilizes specially trained scent detection dogs to support safety across our care settings. Working quietly behind the scenes, these dogs help maintain secure environments. While their role differs from therapy animals, their purpose is the same: to create spaces where care can be delivered without any added stress or disruption. Together, these programs reflect AtlantiCare’s belief that healing is influenced not only by clinical treatment, but by how people feel throughout their experience. Whether through comfort or protection, animals help create environments where healing can truly begin.

New Rehab Hospital Takes Shape in Galloway AtlantiCare celebrated a major milestone this spring as construction began on a new, state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation hospital set to open in Galloway Township in 2026.

The hospital is the result of a joint venture partnership between Select Medical and AtlantiCare. Select Medical is one of the largest operators of critical illness recovery hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient rehabilitation clinics in the United States based on the number of their facilities.

What better way to kick off a signature project than with, well, signatures?

The highly anticipated project kicked off with a symbolic beam-signing ceremony in June, where leaders from both organizations came together to leave their mark on one of the steel beams comprising the structure.

Designed by Caregivers, Built for Patients $75 Million Mainland Expansion

Michael Charlton

Once complete, the 60-bed AtlantiCare Rehabilitation Hospital will offer specialized programs supported by advanced, innovative rehabilitative technologies tailored to each patient’s recovery needs and goals. Hospital programs and services are specially designed to help patients restore strength, mobility and independence as they heal and recover from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders and orthopaedic conditions.

When we began to design our Mainland Campus expansion, we started with a simple principle: create a space that reflects the needs of our patients, shaped by the people who care for them every day. In May, that vision became a reality as we celebrated the completion of our new 35,000 square foot, $75 million expansion project, which adds two patient care floors and 50 state-of-the-art private rooms to the hospital’s Meadows Pavilion. Every feature was thoughtfully chosen to anticipate future patient needs while delivering exceptional care today. The new rooms are integrated with smart technology to enhance patient safety, comfort and convenience. Advanced amenities—like voice-activated and touchscreen controls for entertainment, room temperature and dining preferences—empower patients to customize their stay, while features like bedside dialysis access, digital whiteboards and ceiling-mounted mobility lifts make care more accessible. In addition to the latest technology, the design reflects AtlantiCare’s commitment to whole-person healing. Calming colors, natural materials and original artwork—commissioned through AtlantiCare’s Healing Arts Program and created by local artists—fill the corridors and rooms, creating a calming atmosphere for patients and team members alike.

For many in South Jersey, the opening of this facility will fill a gap in local care. Soon there will be a place where patients can regain their independence and return to the lives they love – without having to leave their community to do it.

Opening 2026 at Bacharach Park

With the 3rd and 4th floors now welcoming patients, renovations are underway on the 1st and 2nd floors to match the look, feel and advanced technology capabilities of the other floors in the Meadows Pavilion. These updates will continue to transform the Mainland Campus into a space that reflects all the hard work, compassion and care that our team provides to our patients every day.

Leading the Way in National Healthcare Innovation In July, AtlantiCare was one of only ten healthcare systems across the country invited to the White House Healthcare Data Interoperability Summit in Washington, D.C. This exclusive invitation underscores our leadership in health IT and our commitment to building a smarter, more connected healthcare system for our patients and community. Chief Information Officer Jordan Ruch represented AtlantiCare at the summit, contributing to discussions on how innovative data strategies can improve patient care, streamline provider workflows and advance national healthcare interoperability. The summit, led by CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Acting DOGE Administrator Amy Gleason, brought together top healthcare and technology leaders, including executives from Google, Apple, Oracle and Cleveland Clinic. AtlantiCare’s participation highlights our commitment to advancing patient care locally while helping to shape national healthcare standards.

Putting AI to Work for Patients: The Clinical AI Agent One of this year’s most meaningful advancements is the Clinical AI Agent, a tool designed to bring more human connection back into the exam room. The Clinical AI Agent listens during patient visits and creates medical notes automatically, allowing providers to focus on listening and asking questions, rather than typing information into a computer. Since its introduction, providers using the Clinical AI Agent have saved an average of 66 minutes per day. That time is reinvested in patient care instead of paperwork and administrative processes. Nurses are also benefiting from new mobility tools that make documenting care and recording vital signs faster and easier. These updates save time and improve accuracy which translates directly into more one-on-one interactions, allowing nurses more bandwidth to provide compassionate, hands-on care and support patients and families throughout their health journey. For our community, these upgrades mean a more seamless experience. Test results, referrals and follow-up care move more quickly and are easier to manage. Most importantly, every patient receives care shaped by more personal attention, more clarity and more connection.

AtlantiCare Powered by Oracle Transforming How Our Community Experiences Care In late 2024, AtlantiCare launched Powered by Oracle—a multi-year transformation designed to modernize how we deliver care across our health system. The goal is to make healthcare easier for patients while giving caregivers tools that help them do what they do best. This initiative isn’t about technology alone, but also about people—giving physicians and nurses more time with their patients, helping teams work more efficiently and creating a seamless experience for every person who walks through our doors. In 2025, our teams made significant progress towards our goal. Three of six major milestones are now complete, each moving us closer to a health system where technology enhances, not replaces, the personal interactions that define great care. This year’s work focused on improving the experience in the exam room and at the bedside while strengthening the operational backbone that keeps care running smoothly. Every step forward reflects our commitment to placing patients at the center of every decision. Our strengthened systems have enhanced the tools our providers and administrators rely on daily, so information flows more easily and time-consuming tasks become simpler. We also improved access to medical records by removing barriers when receiving care from different health systems, giving clinicians a fuller, more accurate picture of each patient’s medical history. As our progress continues, we are excited to deliver our patients a next-generation patient portal that supports all their needs right at their fingertips, including appointments, pre-test requirements, referrals, care plan management, medication adherence, wellness coaching for those with chronic illness, and 24/7 support provided by live and AI support agents.

Jordan Ruch

“Every milestone we achieve brings us closer to what matters most: making healthcare easier for our patients. AtlantiCare Powered by Oracle isn’t just a technology upgrade—it’s a commitment to creating clearer, more connected experiences for every person who trusts us with their care.” – Jordan Ruch, Chief Information Officer

Expanding Clinical Trials Close to Home: Bringing Tomorrow’s Treatments to South Jersey Today

National Expertise, Local Care

For many, the words “clinical trial” conjure images of distant, big-city hospitals or sprawling academic research centers. But groundbreaking cancer treatments aren’t only happening far away—they’re happening right here, at AtlantiCare. Over the past few years, AtlantiCare’s clinical trials program has grown rapidly, opening doors to promising new therapies without requiring patients to travel for care. Under the leadership of Devon McKenzie, MD and Denise Sutor, MBA, BSN, RN, the number of open cancer trials has more than doubled—now including global industry-sponsored studies that are rarely available outside major metropolitan hospitals. “Every trial we open has one goal,” said Dr. McKenzie. “To make sure our patients have access to the latest, most effective care options, without leaving their community or the care team they trust.” Through our affiliation with Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute, AtlantiCare has access to hundreds of trials. While some centers have large volumes of trials, we carefully select only those studies that truly benefit our patients here in South Jersey. This value-over-volume approach ensures that every trial we open addresses the real needs of our community—whether it’s innovative radiopharmaceuticals, cutting- edge targeted therapies or personalized treatments designed to fit each patient’s unique journey. And throughout it all, patients remain under the care of the same compassionate nurses and doctors who have supported them from the start. AtlantiCare’s clinical trials program proves that you don’t have to be the biggest to make the biggest difference. By combining world-class research access with the intimacy of community-based care, we’re delivering breakthroughs close to home... where they matter most.

The AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute and Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute affiliation brings globally recognized cancer expertise, advanced research and clinical trials to patients in South Jersey. Through this affiliation, our community has access to tumor-review boards, clinical trials and second opinions from world-renowned cancer experts—all without leaving the region. Together, we are strengthening cancer care in our community.

“When it comes to clinical trials,

we’re making sure we are delivering what’s best for the community we serve. That’s what matters most.” – Dr. Devon McKenzie AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute

AtlantiCare’s Oncology Pharmacy Sets a New Standard Behind the scenes, some of the most powerful work happens quietly by unsung heroes like David Borrone, AtlantiCare’s Oral Oncology Specialty Pharmacist. David helps patients understand their medication, make their treatments more manageable and access life-changing therapies by securing millions of dollars in grants to ease the financial burden of treatment.

David designed AtlantiCare’s integrated pharmacist model, which has become a hallmark of AtlantiCare’s patient- centered approach and a model now being studied by peers across the country. David is embedded within the care team, meeting directly with patients, answering questions in real time and ensuring they receive their medications quickly and affordably. The moment an oncologist finalizes a treatment plan, David steps in to sit down with patients and their loved ones to explain every detail, including when and how to take their medication, what side effects to look for and how to manage food or drug interactions. David’s team personally manages all prior medication authorizations, often getting approvals within 10 to 15 minutes—meaning most patients receive their medication within 24 hours compared to the industry standard of 2 weeks. Throughout a patient’s care journey, he is continuously meeting with patients to monitor side effects, ensure timely interventions and adherence to treatment plans. Beyond his clinical expertise, David serves as a financial advocate for every patient who walks through our doors. He identifies high co-pays early, applies immediately for diagnosis-specific grants and navigates patient assistance programs on their behalf. In 2025, his efforts resulted in $950,000 in grant funding and $4.4 million in no-cost medications. Since the program’s inception just four years ago, David has secured nearly $18 million in grants and free medication, ensuring no patient has to choose between financial stability and life-saving treatment.

“David and his team are building a model that not only transforms lives here in South Jersey but inspires what’s possible for health systems everywhere.” – Lacey Peterman, AVP, AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute

AtlantiCare’s Primary Care Network Managing your health should fit seamlessly into your life. That’s why AtlantiCare offers multiple ways to access high- quality primary care, ensuring you receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Introducing Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery: World-Class Breast Surgery & Chief of Women’s Oncology Services Every cancer story is personal, and for women in South Jersey, having care close to home can make all the difference. That’s the focus of the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute as it continues to expand its Women’s Oncology Program. Leading this effort is Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery, a nationally recognized, fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist who brings both hands-on expertise and leadership to women’s cancer care in the region. Her path to breast surgery was shaped by one unforgettable patient. As a young surgical resident, she met a woman with advanced breast cancer who had delayed care because of a painful family estrangement. “She told me she didn’t want to call her daughter after so many years apart and have that first conversation be about cancer,”Dr. Yoon-Flannery recalls. “That moment changed me. I knew I wanted to become a breast surgeon patients could feel comfortable turning to, no matter their fears or circumstances.” That experience still drives how she practices today. “I see all of my patients as the women they are, the men they are, as husbands and wives, as moms, grandmothers, daughters,” she says. “I feel very responsible in making sure that a mom is going to be there for her children and not miss any of the important events in their lives.”

In-Office Visits deliver personalized, face-to- face care close to home through our extensive network of primary care practices across southeastern New Jersey. Urgent Care offers expert treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, with convenient hours and shorter wait times so you can get the care you need when you need it. Virtual Primary Care brings the doctor’s office to you, with same-day and next-day appointments available from the comfort of your home, providing our patients with a flexible and convenient option for care.

Dr. Yoon-Flannery is known nationally for advancing new techniques in breast surgery. She has been part of clinical studies that are modernizing care, from nipple-sparing mastectomies and wireless localization for breast conservation to techniques that reduce the need for post-operative drains, one of the most uncomfortable aspects of recovery. She has also spearheaded approaches to protect lymph nodes and reduce the risk of lymphedema, a condition that can significantly affect quality of life for anyone facing breast cancer. Despite her impressive resume, what patients notice most is her presence. She meets not only with individuals, but encourages their families to participate, walking them through every option and deciding together on the best course. “I don’t dictate,” she explains. “I sit down and talk through the pros and cons. Every cancer is different, and every patient is different. Treatment has to be personalized.” For her, every interaction is personal. That’s why she picks up the phone herself to check in with patients. And when it’s time for the operating room, that connection matters even more. Often the only familiar face in the room, she makes sure her patients feel comforted and reassured before they go to sleep. “I want them to know I am here, not just as their surgeon, but as their partner,” she says. It was AtlantiCare’s culture of commitment that drew Dr. Yoon-Flannery in. “From the person that greets you at the front of the building all the way to the physicians, the nurses, the staff, everyone is so incredibly committed to their patients. This commitment and dedication to one another and to the community is really what brought me here.” With breast cancer diagnoses rising among younger women, Dr. Yoon-Flannery feels an even greater sense of responsibility. “I’m passionate about my patients,” she says simply. “This is personal to me. I want every patient in our community to feel that and know they can find world-class care right here.”

Expanded Stroke Recovery Options with Southeastern New Jersey’s First Vivistim ® Paired VNS ™ Therapy Procedure AtlantiCare and Global Neurosciences Institute (GNI) recently introduced an advanced treatment option that gives stroke survivors renewed opportunities to regain strength and movement in the arm affected by their stroke. The neurosurgical team at AtlantiCare and GNI performed southeastern New Jersey’s first Vivistim Paired Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy procedure, marking an important step forward in supporting long-term recovery for patients. The procedure was performed by GNI Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon Dr. Rudy Rahme, Chief of Neurosurgery at AtlantiCare, on a patient who had been living with ongoing weakness in the arm affected by their stroke. For individuals facing similar challenges, Vivistim provides an additional pathway to continue rebuilding strength and function. Vivistim is an FDA-approved therapy that pairs gentle electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve with guided therapeutic exercises. During each session, a small pulse is delivered to the vagus nerve as the patient practices everyday motions such as reaching or grasping. This coordinated approach helps relearn or reinforce the brain pathways involved in movement that may have been affected by stroke. Clinical studies have shown that when incorporated into a structured rehabilitation program, Vivistim can support improvement in arm and hand function, helping patients increase their independence in daily activities. For many, it offers patients a sense of hope as they work to return to more of the life they knew before their stroke. As southeastern New Jersey’s only Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, AtlantiCare provides the highest level of stroke care, from emergency intervention to long-term recovery. AtlantiCare is expanding access to advanced treatment through its partnership with Global Neurosciences Institute, working together to make Vivistim therapy accessible to patients throughout southeastern New Jersey. Together, AtlantiCare and GNI are broadening what recovery can mean for stroke survivors who have reached the limits of traditional therapy.

First Patient to Undergo Robotic Lung Surgery

Most days, Debbie Flad doesn’t have a moment to herself and she wouldn’t have it any other way. At 56, her home in Rio Grande is filled with the laughter of her grandchildren. But her world shifted when doctors discovered something quietly growing inside her. Debbie soon became the first patient to undergo robotic thoracic surgery at AtlantiCare. Her journey began a decade ago after a routine hysterectomy left her struggling to breathe. Tests revealed lung nodules, prompting years of monitoring. When advanced imaging showed one nodule had enlarged, her care team scheduled a biopsy for answers. The results: a Stage 1 neuroendocrine tumor, a rare early form of lung cancer.

She met with Dana J. McCloskey, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in treating diseases of the chest, including cancer, who explained she was an ideal candidate for robotic thoracic surgery, an advanced, minimally invasive technique that allows surgeons to remove cancerous tumors through small incisions using precise, computer-assisted tools. “In thoracic surgery, there has been a tremendous amount of momentum behind robotic-assisted procedures as it allows us to complete operations minimally invasively, leading to shorter hospital stays and better outcomes,” said Dr. McCloskey. Debbie chose the procedure and became AtlantiCare’s first robotic thoracic surgery patient. “Being able to offer patients the latest in minimally invasive technology close to home is a significant step forward for our thoracic surgery program,” said Dr. McCloskey. “And that care doesn’t stop after surgery. We walk with patients through follow-ups, monitoring and survivorship.”

Dr. Dana J. McCloskey

Just weeks after the operation, Debbie was cancer-free and back to her busy routine. She will continue receiving routine CT scans every six months for five years and then annually. “It’s tough to hear the word cancer , but catching it early saved my life. No one wants surgery, but the team was great. They made everything easy for me and my family.”

TAVR allows specialists to replace a narrowed aortic valve using a small catheter rather than with open-heart surgery, enabling many patients, especially those at higher surgical risk, to return home within 24 hours and recover in days instead of weeks. This milestone reflects the skill and leadership of AtlantiCare’s multidisciplinary team, led by Interventional Cardiologist Jeffrey Van Hook, DO, and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Demetri Mavroidis, MD, who together have helped shape one of the region’s most advanced structural heart programs. Dr. Van Hook also serves nationally as a TAVR proctor, sharing expertise and supporting physicians through case planning and technical guidance across the country. As part of our commitment to advancing structural heart care, AtlantiCare plays an active role in national research efforts.

Through participation in the ENVISION and EMBLOK II clinical trials, AtlantiCare specialists are helping evaluate next-generation technologies and systems that may help reduce stroke risk during TAVR procedures. This research gives AtlantiCare patients early access to emerging innovations while helping to shape cardiac care nationwide. Recognized by the American Heart Association for excellence in heart and stroke care, AtlantiCare remains the region’s only 24/7 full-service cardiac center and southeastern New Jersey’s only STEMI-designated hospital, providing round the clock access to life-saving intervention. The 1,000th TAVR milestone reflects a single, powerful commitment that has guided the program from day one: bringing world-class heart care.

A Milestone in Advancing Heart Care Celebrating 1,000th TAVR Procedure

AtlantiCare’s Heart & Vascular Institute marked an important milestone this year: the completion of its 1,000th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure. The achievement reflects more than a decade of progress and expertise in delivering advanced cardiac care close to home. Since launching the program in 2014, AtlantiCare has transformed how aortic valve disease is treated in southeastern New Jersey.

Expanding Access to Pain Management

Setting a New Standard in Men’s Health Dr. Spence Marks 100th Aquablation ® Procedure AtlantiCare recently celebrated a remarkable milestone as Abraham Spence, MD, board-certified urologist, completed his 100th Aquablation therapy procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. In 2025, Dr. Spence performed more Aquablation procedures than any other physician across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, making him the highest-volume Aquablation surgeon in the tri-state region. This achievement reinforces AtlantiCare’s leadership in men’s health and its commitment to advancing innovative, patient-centered urologic care.

When a doctor truly listens and refuses to stop searching for answers, it can make all the difference. One AtlantiCare patient experienced that firsthand and chose to give back in a deeply personal way. A Longport resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, came to AtlantiCare seeking care from Abraham Spence, MD. While Dr. Spence determined that the condition ultimately fell outside his own specialty, he did not stop searching for answers. Instead, he continued to advocate for his patient, ordering further testing and ensuring he was “I knew something was wrong, and I’m not sure many doctors would have dug as deep as Dr. Spence did,” the patient shared. After persistent evaluation and testing, Dr. Spence identified a far more serious condition than initially expected. The diagnosis, and the compassion shown throughout the process, inspired the patient to leave a $100,000 bequest to AtlantiCare. “I have always had very positive experiences with AtlantiCare,” he said. “The nurses are professional and caring. Couple that with superb physicians like Dr. Spence, and we are so fortunate to have an award-winning health system right in our backyard.” This patient’s generosity reflects more than appreciation. It’s a powerful testament to the impact that exceptional care and exceptional caregivers can have on a person’s life when physicians are steadfast advocates for their patients. connected with the appropriate specialists to fully evaluate the issue and determine the right course of treatment.

AtlantiCare’s Pain Management program is guided by a clear philosophy: combining cutting-edge procedures with comprehensive, patient- centered care that goes beyond prescriptions. The goal is to restore function and improve quality of life through safe, evidence- based, minimally invasive care. Re-established just two years ago under the leadership of AndrewWong, DO, the department

BPH is a common, non-cancerous condition that affects more than half of men over the age of 50. It occurs when the prostate gland becomes enlarged, leading to symptoms such as frequent urination and disrupted sleep. While not life-threatening, untreated BPH can lead to bladder damage, kidney problems and long-term incontinence, significantly impacting quality of life and limiting daily activities. AtlantiCare introduced Aquablation therapy in late 2024 to give men more precise treatment options. Using a robotic waterjet guided by real-time ultrasound and camera imaging, Aquablation removes only the excess tissue causing the blockage, while protecting surrounding structures that control bladder function and sexual health. For patients, the results have been profound. Patients report sleeping through the night for the first time in years, traveling without worry and enjoying renewed freedom to stay active without constant discomfort. Partners and families also feel the difference, as routines are no longer disrupted by symptoms. Recovery is typically faster than with traditional surgery, and side effects are often reduced, allowing men to return to their normal routines sooner. Reaching this milestone in less than a year reflects the growing need for advanced prostate care, the positive results and the trust patients place in AtlantiCare’s expertise. With Dr. Spence leading the way, AtlantiCare continues to raise the standard for men’s health.

has grown rapidly and is now fully integrated within the AtlantiCare Neurosciences Institute, collaborating closely with neurosurgery and neurology to deliver a coordinated, comprehensive approach to care. The heart of the program is focused on blending advanced diagnostic tools, targeted procedures, physical rehabilitation and lifestyle-guided therapy to address pain from every angle. Their approach emphasizes safe, opioid-sparing options—using precise interventions and nerve-targeting treatments to reduce reliance on long-term medications. Our Pain Management team also works closely with specialists across AtlantiCare, including neurosurgery, orthopaedics, rheumatology, neurology, physical therapy, behavioral health and primary care. This coordinated model ensures that patients receive seamless, comprehensive individualized treatment plans that reflects the full picture of their health. The team is committed to educating patients and the community about common misconceptions surrounding pain management. “Many people assume pain management is just about writing prescriptions,” says Dr. Wong. “In reality, it’s a highly interventional field focused on addressing the root cause of pain and improving long-term function.” Looking ahead, AtlantiCare plans to expand its pain management services in 2026, with the addition of medical acupuncture and advanced procedures such as minimally invasive lumbar decompression and basivertebral nerve ablation. With its patient-centered philosophy and commitment to innovation, AtlantiCare’s Pain Management program is helping shape the future of this rapidly evolving field.
