Introducing Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery: World-Class Breast Surgery & Chief of Women’s Oncology Services Every cancer story is personal, and for women in South Jersey, having care close to home can make all the difference. That’s the focus of the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute as it continues to expand its Women’s Oncology Program. Leading this effort is Dr. Kay Yoon-Flannery, a nationally recognized, fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist who brings both hands-on expertise and leadership to women’s cancer care in the region. Her path to breast surgery was shaped by one unforgettable patient. As a young surgical resident, she met a woman with advanced breast cancer who had delayed care because of a painful family estrangement. “She told me she didn’t want to call her daughter after so many years apart and have that first conversation be about cancer,”Dr. Yoon-Flannery recalls. “That moment changed me. I knew I wanted to become a breast surgeon patients could feel comfortable turning to, no matter their fears or circumstances.” That experience still drives how she practices today. “I see all of my patients as the women they are, the men they are, as husbands and wives, as moms, grandmothers, daughters,” she says. “I feel very responsible in making sure that a mom is going to be there for her children and not miss any of the important events in their lives.”

In-Office Visits deliver personalized, face-to- face care close to home through our extensive network of primary care practices across southeastern New Jersey. Urgent Care offers expert treatment for minor injuries and illnesses, with convenient hours and shorter wait times so you can get the care you need when you need it. Virtual Primary Care brings the doctor’s office to you, with same-day and next-day appointments available from the comfort of your home, providing our patients with a flexible and convenient option for care.
Dr. Yoon-Flannery is known nationally for advancing new techniques in breast surgery. She has been part of clinical studies that are modernizing care, from nipple-sparing mastectomies and wireless localization for breast conservation to techniques that reduce the need for post-operative drains, one of the most uncomfortable aspects of recovery. She has also spearheaded approaches to protect lymph nodes and reduce the risk of lymphedema, a condition that can significantly affect quality of life for anyone facing breast cancer. Despite her impressive resume, what patients notice most is her presence. She meets not only with individuals, but encourages their families to participate, walking them through every option and deciding together on the best course. “I don’t dictate,” she explains. “I sit down and talk through the pros and cons. Every cancer is different, and every patient is different. Treatment has to be personalized.” For her, every interaction is personal. That’s why she picks up the phone herself to check in with patients. And when it’s time for the operating room, that connection matters even more. Often the only familiar face in the room, she makes sure her patients feel comforted and reassured before they go to sleep. “I want them to know I am here, not just as their surgeon, but as their partner,” she says. It was AtlantiCare’s culture of commitment that drew Dr. Yoon-Flannery in. “From the person that greets you at the front of the building all the way to the physicians, the nurses, the staff, everyone is so incredibly committed to their patients. This commitment and dedication to one another and to the community is really what brought me here.” With breast cancer diagnoses rising among younger women, Dr. Yoon-Flannery feels an even greater sense of responsibility. “I’m passionate about my patients,” she says simply. “This is personal to me. I want every patient in our community to feel that and know they can find world-class care right here.”
