2025 NJ Department of Labor GAINS Grants

From Orientation to Excellence AtlantiCare Celebrates First Year of the Nurse Residency Program This year, AtlantiCare celebrated an exciting milestone: the very first group of new nurses to graduate from our Nurse Residency Program. Launched in 2024 in partnership with the Vizient/American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), the year-long program was designed to help newly licensed nurses find their footing as they transition from the classroom to the bedside.

More than just onboarding and orientation, the program brings new nurses together in monthly cohorts, pairing them with mentors and creating space for reflection and learning. These sessions have quickly become a place where nurses can ask questions, build confidence and lean on one another for support. The impact has been inspiring. Not only have our nurse residents grown in skill and confidence, but the program has also helped AtlantiCare reach a record-high first-year nurse retention rate of 93%—16 percentage points higher than the national average. That means more nurses staying, growing and caring for our patients and communities. And the work is just beginning. With 110 new graduates already enrolled in 2025, the program will continue to nurture the next generation of nurses—strengthening skills at the bedside, building a culture of connection and shaping the future of care across our region.
