Today’s AtlantiCare is southern New Jersey’s largest, most comprehensive and sophisticated healthcare provider – with a network of services covering the entire spectrum of health and wellness. One thing hasn’t changed: our daily focus on investing in infrastructure, technology and talent to deliver the region’s best possible healthcare. It’s a land of contrasts, diversity in landscapes and communities, each marching to the rhythm of a unique heartbeat. With quiet, out-of-the-way hamlets. Quaint, Main Street towns. The 24/7 Rock ‘n’ Roll party of Atlantic City. Acres of pristine forest. Boardwalks and piers bursting with light and color of thousands of family-friendly diversions. Miles of white sand beaches. Fishing villages that time forgot. All built on a foundation of solid neighborhoods, of hard-working people raising children in highly rated schools and a culture that puts family first. That’s the southern shore in one paragraph. But it’s so much more – unique in many ways and unlike just about any other place. If you spend any time here, you are sure to hear this expression: once you get South Jersey sand between your toes, it’s easy to fall in love with the place. Even better, AtlantiCare’s service footprint occupies a place like none other in the mid-Atlantic – the southern seashore of New Jersey – one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets.
We invite you to spend some time getting to know the health system we’re so very proud of, the rich tapestry of locations we serve and the people who make them both truly special.
AtlantiCare’s story begins in 1898, when Atlantic City Hospital opened with just 10 beds. Improvement and investment has continued since those early days – with the first major expansion to the hospital coming just a few decades later. In the 1970s, Atlantic City Medical Center built a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Atlantic City and a new mainland campus in Galloway Township. Expansion continued through the 80s and 90s, with the addition of a Level II Trauma Center in 1991.
AtlantiCare Health System was formed in 1993 with plans for significant infrastructure growth. Since then, AtlantiCare has invested millions of dollars in new services and facilities.
Ground was broken on the first AtlantiCare Health Park in Egg Harbor Township in 1999. Since then, additional Health Parks were built in Cape May Court House, Hammonton and Manahawkin – each making ambulatory and outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic services more convenient to more people. After a decade of active strategic development, the 2000s saw a flurry of activity, with millions invested to build and expand cutting-edge services, including: • The region’s only cardiac surgery program at the Heart & Vascular Institute • A new Emergency Department, Center for Childbirth and Cardiac Catheterization & Rhythm Center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus in Galloway • Opening the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute, a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner, with locations in Egg Harbor Township and Cape May Court House • A commitment to upgrade services and facilities throughout the entire Mainland campus, with a transformation and modernization initiative, including building the Rothman Institute Pavilion for Orthopaedics • Building a network of Urgent Care centers • Opening four ambulatory surgery centers in Egg Harbor Township (two centers), Little Egg Harbor and Cape May Court House • A fully equipped Satellite Emergency Department in Hammonton. • A transformation of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Campus with the opening of the George F. Lynn Harmony Pavilion, new Emergency Center, Trauma Center and patient tower • Special Care Centers in Atlantic City and Galloway, providing life-saving care for adults with chronic medical conditions • AtlantiCare Health Solutions, Inc., a not-for-profit health accountability organization • AtlantiCare Physician Group, a network of highly skilled physicians, nurse practitioners and other providers in both primary and specialty care • The AtlantiCare Health Park in Manahawkin, with convenient, one-stop services including primary and specialty medical care, imaging, pharmacy and urgent care • Federally Qualified Health centers (FQHC) in Atlantic City and Galloway, providing coordinated health and wellness services for patients with limited financial resources and insurance AtlantiCare is well positioned to continue to lead, with even greater investment, laser-focused on future needs. AtlantiCare is taking on the 21st century’s greatest health challenges - like cancer, substance use disorder and healthier lifestyles – with dedication, innovation and expertise from professionals like you.
