EMS Interns
EMS Internship Guide Set yourself up for success by modeling professionalism in every interaction. These foundational standards help you grow as a valued member of the team.
Professionalism Professionalism means showing respect, being responsible, and following through. It’s not just about showing up—it’s how you show up. Be on time and finish tasks when asked. Take responsibility for your actions—both the good and the mistakes. Treat everyone kindly: patients, EMTs, nurses, and other staff. Ask questions and show interest in helping. Getting Started Welcome to your EMS internship at AtlantiCare! This guide will help you understand what’s expected, how to succeed, and how to make the most of your experience. Communication & Language Clear and respectful communication helps the team work well together. This includes how you talk, text, or write emails. Reply to messages within a day. Avoid slang, emojis, or abbreviations in professional settings. Speak clearly and respectfully. Ask questions if you’re unsure—there’s no such thing as a bad question! Example: If your shift starts at 8:00 AM, aim to arrive by 7:50 to be ready.
Performance & Time Management Managing your time shows that you’re serious about learning and helping. Use a planner or your phone to keep track of tasks. If you finish something early, ask what you can help with. Be organized—keep a notebook of what you learn each day. Ask if something isn’t clear instead of guessing. Workplace Policies Keep your phone on silent and out of sight during shifts. Never post about patients or your work on social media. Respect patient privacy—HIPAA rules apply to you too.
✅ Tip: If you’re unsure about a rule, just ask your supervisor.
Etiquette Say hello and smile when greeting people. Put your phone away when talking to others. Make eye contact when someone is speaking to you. Use polite language—no slang or swearing.
Dress Code
Wear your ID badge at all times. Wear neat, clean clothes that fit well. Closed-toe shoes and pulled-back hair are required in clinical areas. No hoodies, ripped jeans, or flip-flops. Owning Your Internship Ask if you can help someone if you're not busy. Use slow times to learn: read, watch videos, or organize notes. Interview a team member about their EMS role. Keep a journal of what you did, learned, and how you felt each day. ✅ Downtime Activities Checklist Use this checklist when things slow down. Each task is an opportunity to grow. ☐ Read any AtlantiCare news update or healthcare article ☐ Watch a video on patient care, leadership, or digital tools ☐ Explore a trending topic in healthcare or your professional field ☐ Draft a LinkedIn post about what you’re learning ☐ Update your resume with skills or software you’ve learned ☐ Reflect on what values are important to you in a career ☐ Research a role or certification you might want to pursue ☐ Organize your notes, calendar, and goals for the week ☐ Email your supervisor a summary of your week’s accomplishments Final Note to Interns:
You get out of this experience what you put into it. At AtlantiCare, you're not "just an intern"—you're part of our mission to make a difference in health and healing. Stay engaged, ask questions, take initiative, and own your experience.
